Aqueduct Pick Four Horse Betting Preview – March 5

Horse Racing Picks at Aqueduct
The last time we went after the $250,000 Guaranteed Late Pick Four at Aqueduct, the racing action was canceled due to weather. That doesn’t appear to be a concern this Saturday, although there is a 30% chance of rain. Saturday’s sequence includes three forgettable races, but the highlight is the $250,000 Gotham-G3, and that makes the wager attractive.

Race 8 is a six-furlong sprint for New York-bred $25,000 maidens, and Linda Rice appears to hold the upper hand. 10-BAZINGA shows a long gap in her works from December 31 through February 10, but a recent trio of drills is quick and Ramon Dominguez picks up the mount. 7-WINGED BANDIT has hit the board in both starts, most recently for twice today’s price. She clearly looks like the best of those who have already run.

Bettors looking to cast a wider net may wish to include 2-ANNA MAE JONES, 4-BUDDY SYSTEM, 5-IMAGINE TOMORROW and 12-PAM’S LUCKY LADY.

Race 9 is another six-furlong sprint, this one for $7,500 claimers who have never won two races. I’m not a fan of playing maiden claiming winners on the rise, but 7-DUKE OF YORK deserves a look here. He comes off a daylight win, and with only two starts he likely has a lot more room for improvement that his fellow cast of proven losers. 8-EX PAT has been well-beaten in his last two starts, but had rough trips both times. In fact, note that he’s encountered trouble in four of his last five starts – with the only clean trip resulting in an easy win. And look who picks up the mount today – Ramon Dominguez.

3-BAWANA JAKE has to be included, despite never winning over a fast track and blowing a clear lead at even-money under these conditions February 12. It should be noted that only one sprint race was won wire-to-wire that day, so maybe there was a slight bias working against. 4-HISTORY STARTS NOW is an obvious contender based on Beyer Speed Figures – if you’re willing to overlook the fact that he has been on the sidelines for 12 months and takes a sizeable class drop in his return.

5-JELLO SHOT broke last-of-12 from the rail but finished with a rush to be just a neck behind Bawana Jake last time out, but was his late surge aided by the aforementioned bias? 10-DELICIOUS STORM has never raced this low and goes out for solid connections. 11-PAYOUT comes off an improved effort and switches to Jaime Rodriguez, who scores at a 43% for this barn. 14-ZEN VILLAGE might not draw in but has the speed to contend if he does. He goes first-off-the-claim for a high-percentage barn.

Race 10 is the feature, the Gotham-G3 for three-year-olds. This is the last major prep for the Wood Memorial-G1 on April 9, and it features another talented colt from the barn of Todd Pletcher.

5-STAY THIRSTY hasn’t been out since finishing fifth in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile-G1, but he has been working very well in south Florida – reportedly in company with Uncle Mo. He’s the class here, having finishing second in the Hopeful-G1 last September, and he’s consistently run faster than most of these. Yet to win beyond seven furlongs, but that appears the only knock.

4-TOBY’S CORNER in unbeaten in three starts since stretching out, and he comes off a strong win in the local Whirlaway ($98K) at this distance. He can handle it wet or dry and should be poised to strike when they turn for home.

It’s tough to imagine both favorites getting beat in this spot, but bettors looking to take a real stab would likely include some combination of 1-THE FED EASED, 2-NACHO SAINT, 3-STARSHIP CAESAR, 7-PREACHINTOTHEDEVIL and 9-DAWLY.

Race 10 ends the sequence, with another cheap state-bred claimer at six furlongs. A field of 12, with a combined record of 0-for-157, is entered. The top money earner is 12-SMARTERALEX – who is winless in 56 career starts!

He is among the “throw outs,” and that may be the best way to attack this race. Joining him on the “out list” is 5-CRESCENT MOON DR, 7-RIGHTUPLYNN’SALLEY, 8-OMMADON’S REIGN, and 10-LEADING ARTICLE.

In some fashion we’ll include the rest – and take our chances.
