Del Mar Opening Soon

The track at Del Mar, California is set to open soon, with it’s 71st season of competitive horse racing. Trainers from all over will be looking to net the win on opening day, and the purse as well. The $100,000 Oceanside Stakes are up for grabs, but who will claim it?

As with anything there are favorites. This is extremely true of horse racing, where any number of factors can influence a race. The undefeated Twirling Candy will make its debut in the stakes on Wednesday, going in strongly favored for the win.

Son of a great 2003 Pacific Classic winner Candy Ride, the horse is looking strong with an impressive record tucked away already. It currently leads a field of 10 3-year-olds on the Jimmy Durante course. As with any sport, training is all important.

So far, the training has proved to be flawless, Twirling Candy, under the guidance of trainer John Sadler, is now at a 2 for 2 standing. The pair will be looking to surprise the competition on Wednesday, with a swift approach and a strong finish, pressuring all the way down the track.

Be sure to keep your eyes on the competition however, things won’t be extremely easy for Twirling Candy and Sadler. There are other horses who want the prize just as badly. In a strange twist of fate, Macias, Gallant Gent and Domonation, also trained by Sadler will be competing.

Macias will prove to be the toughest, trained by Hall Of Famer Bob Baffert. The animal will carry 121 pounds into the race, and is starting off the richest horse in the race with four wins in ten races to it’s name. Twirling Candy, under Sadler, will be looking to take the win from Baffert.
