Fancy Point Takes The Competition

One thing is certain about Fancy Point – she is a great horse that delivers unexpected results despite her size and charming demeanor. On the track, she is a devil that races like the wind. When the gates opened for Wednesday’s $70,000 P.G. Johnson Stakes, Fancy Point unleashed hell on her seven opponents. She broke from the gates and ran clear of the pack under the expert guidance of the ever eager Javier Castellano. The duo ran unrivaled for more than three-quarters of a mile, repelling any challenges from the other horses.

She came home a 1 1/2-length winner over late-running Kathmanblu, and really surprised everyone in the stands. The horse appeared so dominant on the track. The future is quite bright for this powerful team. It was the first victory for Fancy Point, who had finished fourth in her only other start. She seemed to favor the turf surface, and really took well to the race. Not having any problems with the other horses, she took off red hot for the finish, driving home the win with surprising power. She covered the 1 1/16 miles in 1:42.78 and returned $9.70 to win.

Few horses can break early and maintain such a large lead over an entire track. What usually ends up happening is that riders will press in the last quarter of the track, going for a final sprint in attempt to ride down an exhausted horse. More often than not it ends up working, but not against Fancy Point. She held the race from the moment she left the gates. It was also the first win of the meet for trainer Will Phipps, who had gone 0 for 17 through the first 34 days.
