Four stakes highlight the horse betting action at Aqueduct on Saturday, including the $250,000 Gotham Stakes (G2) for three-year-olds with Kentucky Derby aspirations.
Whirlaway winner Toby’s Corner makes his first start in graded stakes company, and if he is a serious Derby contender as I think he is, he needs to start earning enough money to earn a spot in the starting gate on the first Saturday of May.
His main competition will come from Stay Thirsty, the Todd Pletcher trainee who is making his first start since checking in fifth in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (G1) at Churchill Downs last fall.
In his previous start he ran a good second behind Boys At Toscanova in the Hopeful (G1).
The Pletcher trainee has been working steadily for his return off the four month layoff and Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (G1) champion and early Kentucky Derby favorite Uncle Mo has kept the colt company in his morning drills.
The stakes action kicks off on Saturday with the $65,000 Broadway Stakes, which drew a field of five New York breds who will go six furlongs in the inner track.
Meese Rocks, who has landed in the exacta in six of eight trips on the inner track in her career will be trying to bounce back off a fourth place finish in the Barbara Fritchie (G2) at Laurel Park.
Lots of Stones figures to take some betting action off her sharp win last out against second level allowance foes and is the 9/5 second choice on the betting line.
The $65,000 Fred Cappy Capossela drew a compact field of five three-year-olds, led by Rift, who is coming off a sharp win against first level allowance company.
The Rick Dutrow trainee checked in third in his previous start in the Jimmy Winkfield Stakes.
Ben Perkins sends out Vengeful Wildcat for his three-year-old debut. The colt was last seen running second in the Sapling (G3) last September at Monmouth Park.
The $100,000 Tom Fool Handicap (G3) drew a field of six led by the Todd Pletcher entry of Have You Ever and Calibrachoa, the 4/5 morning line betting favorites.
Have You Ever was claimed by Pletcher for $50,000 in January and was sixth against non-winners of three optional claimers in his first start for the new barn.
The stronger half of the entry is Calibrachoa, who was claimed by Pletcher for $40,000 last November and the colt has won the Gravesand and Toboggan (G3) in his first two outings for Pletcher.
Flat Bold figures to take some betting action off his sharp win versus third level optional claimers on Jan. 28. The runner up in that race was Be Bullish, who won the Hollie Hughes Stakes in his next outing on Feb. 21.
