Giant Moon Beats the Odds

Everyone loves it when the underdog comes out on top. Well, for all you sappy fans out there, this is a story that will stir your emotions. Amidst all well trained, scientifically fed, speed demon horses out there today, one prevailed on nothing but willpower and old school stamina. Giant Moon blew the competition away after taking the outside track for the victory at Saratoga on Monday.

The race was a 1 1/8 mile for New York breds, and the top horse handicapping picks going into the event were Groomedforvictory and Icabad Crane. Giant Moon, ridden by Edgar Prado, would prove to have more heart, and defeat the favorites. Again, a race came down to the wire, it was a neck victory, and a much deserved one at that.

As always, training can beat genetic disposition. If a horse is bred for speed, but isn’t trained properly, a horse with inferior genetic traits can win. No matter what anyone says, if a horse has been conditioned to race, it will perform. You cannot take a fresh horse, born of a champion racer, and expect it to defeat veteran racers with no training whatsoever. Horses are trained from an early age and are usually trained with a single race in mind. Many stables have two or three horses for the Kentucky Derby Betting alone.

Due to the fact that each track rides different, it can be difficult for one single horse to claim victories at many different races. It does happen however, and on Monday, Giant Moon took the race at Saratoga, with an interesting strategy. Usually a rider will try and take the inside, it’s the shortest route. Edgar Prado however, had a different idea, take the long way, the outside line, and wear the competition down. It worked, and Giant moon took the win in 1:49.31- he paid $3.70.
