Two Jockeys Down

Two jockeys were injured when they were thrown from their mounts in Saturday’s third race at Aqueduct. The accident began when Ryan and Jack stumbled and fell, throwing apprentice jockey Jason Garcia to the ground. Garcia may have struck the portable barrier in the fall. Jose Bermudez, riding October Dreams, was following behind and struck Ryan and Jack after the lead horse fell. Bermudez was sent flying from his mount as a result of the collision. While October Dreams was able to get up after the fall and gallop away, Ryan and Jack was not so lucky. The horse was euthanized after it was determined that it had received a fractured skull in the accident.

Still, the race officials are expecting a massive turnout, as the new program involving night races in the fall have been a great attraction for fans around the area. As such, all involved can come out to see the horses do their thing. Attendance has averaged a whopping 27,897 for the seven night programs held during the last two spring meets. That being said, officials are expecting at least 25 thousand people to turn up during the race.
