Racing Runs in the Family

Many who follow the top news in the equestrian world will know who trainer Lisa Merritt, daughter of the renowned trainer John Oder, is. With a strong family tradition of horse training winners, things are looking great for Merritt as the 2010 races come and go. While she managed to clinch only 4 races in 2009, she is in a prime position to secure some big wins this year.

Things are looking good for Merritt, with contenders for the two allowance races on Arlington’s nine-race Thursday program. There is a strong chance of victory, given her superior training techniques. With so much attention devoted to the fine animals she works with, there is little chance of failure. Merritt has given her other horses time off, and pointed most of her stock for the Arlington season.

Dedication, and focus make the difference. With so many trainers spread out over many different races, and with so many horses to look after, things can get scattered. Merritt is able to focus solely on the Arlington series and provide better results due to not being distracted with other races. She was recently hired by Slapshot Racing LLC, which is a partnership of horse owners. The match up has paid off, even though they have been in communication for several years, she didn’t accept their offer until 2009.

Everything points towards Merritt winning. With Sweet Lemon Chello in the race, the odds are good that they will take the purse. Last winter, Lemon won the six-figure Debutante Stakes for Illinois-bred 2-year-olds by more than eight lengths- a great performance for a young horse. Coupled with Merritt’s excellent training, and family history, this has the makings of a winning team.
